Pa. awards $1 million grant to clean up former Nabisco plant
February 9, 2007
The state awarded a $1 million grant this morning to the Regional Industrial Development Corp. of Southwestern Pennsylvania for cleanup of the former Nabisco plant in East Liberty.
The RIDC will use $335,000 of its money to help clean up asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls, lead-based paint and other hazardous materials from the plant, located on Penn Avenue.
Walnut Capital Management Inc., based in Shadyside, will develop the 6.5-acre property into 223,000 square feet of office space, 165,000 square feet of retail space and a 120-room hotel. The company expects the development to create 1.600 new jobs. The complex, which is expected to cost $120 million to $125 million, will be named Bakery Square.
"The vision and plan for this property are tremendously exciting. To have not only business here, but housing and retail is wonderful," said Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen McGinty when presenting the grant at the plant this morning.
Plans are to break ground on the development in September and start the clean-up within the next month
