'Bakery Square' Shops, Hotel Project Gets Boost
February 9, 2007

PITTSBURGH -- Gov. Ed Rendell announced a $1 million investment Friday that will help finance a major brownfield redevelopment project in Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood.

The grant will go toward cleaning up the former Nabisco plant and preparing the land to be used for Bakery Square -- a new development with retail and office space and a 120-room hotel. Several major retailers -- including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market, Giant Eagle Market District and Borders -- have already opened up shop in the East Liberty area.

The Bakery Square money is coming from the state's Growing Greener II program. It will be used to remove asbestos, PCBs, lead-based paint and other hazardous materials from the site, according to Rendell's office.
