Zoning board OKs Walgreens, Starbucks
By Norm Vargo
June 07, 2007

Plans to construct a Walgreens Pharmacy and Starbucks Coffee Shop on the site of the Chesterfields Restaurant on Route 30 in North Huntingdon moved forward Tuesday night.

The township zoning hearing board unanimously granted a variance to Walnut Capital Development to provide 79 off-street parking spaces for a proposed 14,465-square foot Walgreens and a 1,740-square foot Starbucks.

"Walnut Capital's application meets township criteria in that the peak demand periods for Starbucks and Walgreens would not conflict. It appears that there is potential to share parking spaces between the two proposed uses," said township Planning Director Andrew Blenko. Starbucks' peak periods generally are early morning, he said, while Walgreens are the remainder of the day.

"Based on these factors, I believe the proposed parking is adequate for the contemplated uses."

According to Mr. Blenko, Walnut Capital's next step is to present a site plan for approval by the township planning commission and the board of commissioners. Chesterfields will be razed.
