A Midsummer Night's Dream in Harlem

"The course of true love never did run smooth…" In this heightened and hilarious retelling of the Bard’s most magical romantic comedy, Resident Director Justin Emeka draws upon the art and music of the Harlem Renaissance to inject Shakespeare's beloved story with new life and humor, contemporary fashions and ancient rituals. In this adaptation, the world of mischievous fairies, lovelorn Athenians, and rude mechanicals is our world and celebrates Black culture with imaginative influences from around the globe. For Shakespeare scholars and visionaries alike, this production is the stuff that dreams are made on.
Vanisha Gould Quartet

Vanisha Gould came to New York in 2015 from Simi Valley, California. Inspired by artists like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Carmen McRae and Ella Fitzgerald – Vanisha has successfully curated her own sound as a composer and band leader. Performing originals and music from the Great American Songbook on several groundbreaking stages both in New York and overseas, she aspires to continue sharing her voice with audiences in New York and beyond.

The Epic Story of Basketball's Forgotten Era with Claude Johnson

Presented by the History Center’s African American Program, this in-person program will be led by Claude Johnson, the founder of the Black Fives Foundation, who spent decades researching Black basketball history and its impact for his book, “The Black Fives: The Epic Story of Basketball’s Forgotten Era.”
